SUMMARY
One of the longest running toy/cartoon combinations, Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles were created in 1984 by Kevin Eastman and Peter Laird. The comic book series was independenly published by Mirage Studios. The comic introduced us to the turtles, who were mutated into humanoid forms by radioactive mutagen. The turtles were trained in the art of ninjitsu by master Splinter, a mutated rat. Splinter named the turtles after Renaissance artists, Leonardo, Donatello, Raphael and Michelangelo. The Ninja Turtles befriended TV news reporter April O' Neil and fight the evil Foot Clan of ninjas led by the Shredder. In 1987, a 5 part animated mini-series aired, followed by a regular series next year. Playmates launched a line of action figures that soon flew off toy shelves. In 1990, a feature length film debuted, grossing $135 million at the box office. CBS picked up the animated series for their Saturday morning block. Two sequel movies were also made in 1991 and 1993. Playmates made hundreds of figures from 1988-1998. The 1987 animated series lasted nine years with 193 episodes.
